Now Playing Tracks

So soothing and haunting at the same time. So sad to lose this man.

The great folklorist and multi-instrumentalist (and Pete Seeger’s brother) Mike Seeger (August 15, 1933 – August 7, 2009) performs ‘Walking Boss’ for Smithsonian Folkways on a 5-string fretless banjo. He gives some historical information about the song in the video. This song is unfortunately absent on his wonderful album Southern Banjo Sounds, in which he explores the many tunings, picking patterns, and different banjo forms from the southern United States. These songs range from an early, African-derived tune on a fretless gourd banjo to a 20th century bluegrass tune on a modern, fretted 5-string resonator banjo. I don’t know about you, but I want to learn how to play the banjo every time I hear a good clawhammer player…

Right on.

I’m looking through videos for a piece I’m working on and somehow got on a trail of dogs howling to quiet crying babies.

It turns out huskies and wolfdogs are wonderful with infants.

Like, oddly wonderful.

Like, if I ever crank something out of this womb I’m probably going to want a wolfdog named Nana to babysit while I heat up some EasyMac in the kitchen or have my panic attacks in the bathroom.

Here is a wolfdog getting shit done.
